ORG is collaborating with Certhon Greenhouse Solutions, on the urban farm for the roofs of ‘FoodMet’, Abattoir SA’s covered market in Anderlecht that opened its doors last spring (More on this project under ‘SOMA’, or click here). Now Abattoir has signed a contract with BIG (Building Integrated Greenhouse) for the managing and operating of an urban farm of 4000m² with 2000m² of greenhouses for aquaponics.
Aquaponics is a system that creates an ecological balance by combining hydroponics (growing plants in water) and aquaculture (breeding invertebrates). The fish provide the necessary nutrients for plant growth and the plant roots filter the water for the fish. BIG is counting on a production of 25 tons of fish and 40 tons of fruits and vegetables each year. These will be sold both in the FoodMet itself, in shops and restaurants of the neighborhood, and via wholesale trade. It’s the first urban farm on this scale in Belgium and one of the first in Europe.
The building permit was delivered recently, ORG and Certhon are now executing the final design and bidding documents for the new greenhouses, roof design and additional offices, dressing rooms and technical spaces in the market building. BIG hopes to start construction in February.
